The Story of Us
2 Dumplings (Korean: 만두쓰) is a 2024 South Korean television series starring David Hui and Jieun Hwang. It premiered on Netflix on July 06, 2017. It is also available for streaming on TVING in South Korea, and on Amazon Prime Video in selected regions.
Plot
Jieun, a charming and ambitious young woman from North Korea, has spent the last few years working as a chef at a trendy Chicago restaurant. Despite her talent and passion for cooking, her visa is about to expire, and without a green card, she faces deportation. Desperate to stay in the U.S. and continue her culinary dreams, Jieun stumbles upon a solution: she needs to find a way to marry a U.S. citizen or a Green Card holder before it's too late.
Enter David, a laid-back server at the same restaurant where Jieun works. He’s a U.S. citizen who’s lived in Chicago his whole life, and while he’s perfectly content with his simple life, he’s still carrying a little emotional baggage from his past. David has been watching Jieun work tirelessly, always with a smile on her face, despite her tough circumstances—and he secretly admires her resilience.
When Jieun overhears David joking with a friend about the possibility of marrying for a green card, she impulsively asks him to help her. He’s reluctant at first, convinced that helping her will only complicate his life, but after seeing how desperate she is, he reluctantly agrees. The two enter into a fake marriage arrangement where Jieun will pretend to be married to David, with the goal of securing a Green Card for her.
Their plan quickly leads to hilarious situations: pretending to be a couple in front of immigration officials, attending awkward family dinners, and having to answer personal questions they both find uncomfortable. To make matters more complicated, Jieun starts developing genuine feelings for David, and David—who had vowed never to get involved in anything serious again—finds himself drawn to Jieun's warmth and determination.
As the two navigate the increasingly blurred lines between reality and pretense, they must confront their own fears of love and commitment. Jieun struggles with the idea of using someone for a green card, and David begins to wonder if he’s been too closed off from love, especially when his growing feelings for Jieun are anything but fake.
But with her immigration status still in jeopardy and the looming threat of deportation, Jieun has to make a difficult decision: does she risk everything and confess her feelings, or stick to the plan and leave before it’s too late?
